Cookie Fantasy

보이어의 황상준이 그간의 작은 리서치 프로젝트를 바탕으로 하여 전시 «쿠키 판타지 Cookie Fantasy»를 열었습니다. 어린 시절 과자 패키지 속 이미지를 마치 해외 관광 엽서처럼 느꼈던 경험에서 출발한 이 프로젝트는, 과자 패키지의 열화된 이미지를 업스케일링하거나 재창작함으로써 흐릿한 환상을 다시 구체화하고, 그 과정에서 낯선 세계에 대한 욕망을 드러냅니다. 🍪👨🏻‍🍳

Hwang Sangjoon of Bowyer presented an exhibition based on a series of small research projects he had been developing. Beginning from his childhood experience of perceiving the images on snack packaging as if they were postcards from overseas destinations, the project upscales and reimagines the degraded imagery from these wrappers, giving renewed form to faded fantasies and, in the process, revealing a longing for unfamiliar worlds. 🍪👨🏻‍🍳

작업 노트:
«쿠키 판타지 Cookie Fantasy»는 어린 시절 한국 ‘옛날 과자’ 포장지에 담겨 있던 이국적 풍경 이미지를 출발점으로, 기억과 환상, 소비의 관계를 되묻는 작업이다. 서양식 건축과 목가적 전원, 바로크풍 명화의 파편들로 채워졌던 과자 패키지는 작가에게 한 장의 관광 엽서이자 낯선 세계를 향한 작은 동경의 매개였다. 그러나 시간이 흐르며 인쇄면이 바래고 풍경은 그 지시 대상을 잃은 채 희미한 환상의 잔상으로만 남았고, 흐릿해지는 시각과 도리어 또렷해지는 감정 사이의 간극이 이 프로젝트의 출발점이 되었다. 전시는 열화된 패키지 이미지를 수집해 이미지 생성 AI로 재창작함으로써, 사라져 가던 환상을 다시 구체적 형상으로 끌어올린다. 결국 환상이 형체를 갖게 되는 순간 그것이 한 점의 그림인지 또 하나의 상품인지를 관객에게 되묻는다.

Designer’s Note:
Cookie Fantasy is a project that takes as its starting point the exotic landscape imagery once printed on the wrappers of old Korean confectionery, returning to questions about the relationships between memory, fantasy, and consumption. Filled with fragments of Western architecture, pastoral countryside scenes, and Baroque-style paintings, these snack packages served the artist as both tourist postcards and small vessels of yearning for distant, unfamiliar worlds. As time passed, however, the printed surfaces faded, and the landscapes—severed from their referents—lingered only as the dim afterimage of a fantasy. The gap between this blurring vision and the emotions that, paradoxically, grew sharper became the point of departure for this project. By collecting these deteriorated package images and recreating them through image-generating AI, the artist draws what had been a vanishing fantasy back into concrete form. Ultimately, Cookie Fantasy asks the viewer: at the moment fantasy assumes a tangible shape, is what we are looking at a picture, or yet another commodity?
