사투리는 못 참지!
Dialect, Can't Resist!

국립한글박물관 기획특별전 «사투리는 못 참지!»에 한국 문학작품 속 방언을 이용한 그래픽 포스터로 참여했습니다. 보이어의 디자이너 이화영은 현기영의 소설 「지상에 숟가락 하나」 속 제주도 방언을 소재로 제주도의 물과 돌을 연상시키는 포스터를 제작했습니다. 거의 평생 서울 사람이었던 디자이너에게 제주도 방언은 구체적인 말이라기보다는 섬의 바다 내음과 현무암의 질박한 감촉으로 다가왔습니다. 소설 속 인물의 눈물 젖은 기쁨을 마치 모래에 쓴 글자가 물에 번지고 점차 사라져가는 듯한 느낌으로 표현했습니다. 🌊

We participated in the special exhibition Dialects, Can’t Resist! at the National Hangeul Museum with a graphic poster inspired by regional dialects in Korean literature. For this project, BOWYER’s designer Lee Hwayoung created a poster based on the Jeju dialect found in Hyun Ki-young’s novel A Spoon on the Ground. The design evokes the water and volcanic stones of Jeju Island. To a designer who has spent most of her life in Seoul, the dialect did not arrive as concrete words, but as the scent of the sea and the coarse texture of basalt. The tear-streaked joy of the novel’s protagonist is expressed like words written in sand — blurring and fading as the waves wash over them. 🌊
