The Great Modern Square

『엘르』 매거진 5월호 기획기사 “내일을 위한 메시지”에 참여했습니다. 이 기사는 2020년, 세계를 뒤덮은 위기와 차별, 혐오, 분열 속에서 지금 우리가 서로에게 전할 수 있는 메시지가 무엇인지 여러 분야의 창작자들에게 묻습니다. 보이어의 이화영은 작은 사각형 안에 갇힌 듯한 요즘의 일상을 손톱만 한 작은 이미지로 풍자했습니다. 언뜻 귀여워 보이는 그림 속 잔인한 진실은, 매체 속에서 스펙터클로 소비되어 버린 인간의 불행을 비판적인 시각으로 드러냅니다. 📱

We participated in ELLE magazine’s May feature article, “A Message for Tomorrow.” This piece asks creators from various fields what message we can share with one another amid the crises, discrimination, hatred, and division that swept the world in 2020. Lee Hwayoung of BOWYER satirized today’s life, as if trapped in a small square, through thumbnail-sized images. Beneath the seemingly cute drawings lies a cruel truth, revealing from a critical perspective how human misfortune has been consumed as spectacle by the media. 📱

작업 노트:
조그만 사각형 방에서 조그만 사각형 화면을 보는 시간이 많아졌다. 사람들은 조그만 사각형 마스크를 쓰고 외출하고 사각형 상자로 택배를 받는다. 사각형 텔레비전에서는 사각형 대화창에서 사각형 이미지로 인간의 존엄성을 짓밟은 사람의 얼굴이 나온다. 나는 계속 사각형 화면을 쓸어내려본다.

Designer’s Note:
I’ve been spending more time in a small square room, looking at a small square screen.
People go out wearing small square masks and receive deliveries in square boxes.
On the square television, inside a square chat window, appear the square images of people who have trampled on human dignity. I keep swiping down the square screen.
