도쿄 리믹스

도쿄에 위치한 Territory Gallery에서 작은 그래픽 실험들을 모아 전시했습니다. 보이어의 황상준은 “전형성”이라는 주제로 도쿄의 이미지 조각들을 충돌시키는 시도를 했으며 일본의 정치인 포스터와 프리쿠라(스티커사진)의 이미지와 텍스트를 리믹스하는 형식 실험을 진행했습니다. 모든 인물 이미지는 생성형AI 미드저니를 통해 제작했습니다. 선거 포스터에 흔히 등장하는 인물들과 텍스트는 작은 프리쿠라 스티커로, 선거 포스터는 그에 전혀 어울리지 않은 인물군상(갸루, 토요코키즈, 호스트, 불량소녀)들을 넣어 포스터로 제작했습니다. 🗼

At Territory Gallery in Tokyo, we presented a collection of small graphic experiments. Hwang Sangjoon of BOWYER explored the theme of “typicality” through a collision of fragmented images of Tokyo, conducting a formal experiment that remixed visuals and text from Japanese political posters and purikura (photo booth stickers). All character images were created using generative AI, Midjourney. Politician-like portraits and campaign slogans were reduced to miniature purikura stickers, while the actual election poster format was reimagined with figures who would typically never appear in such contexts — gyaru, Toyoko Kids, hosts, and delinquent girls. 🗼

작업 노트:
그래픽 디자인에서 ‘전형성(typicality)’은 황상준의 오랜 관심사이자 작업의 주제이다. ‘전형성’은 부정적인 의미로는 ‘틀에 박힌’ 것으로 받아들여지기도 하지만, 국가, 사회, 시대를 아우르는 인간의 ‘공통 감각’이기도 하다. 그는 이 프로젝트(TokyoRemix)를 통해, 외국인으로서 기억 속에 남은 도쿄의 이미지를 단편적으로 배열했다. 그리고 서로 다른 축에 위치한 이미지들을 충돌시킴으로써 생겨나는 기묘함이나 모호한 경계를 드러내고자 했다. 동시에, 이 작업은 형식에 대한 실험이기도 하다.

Designer’s Note:
In graphic design, “typicality” has long been a central theme and area of interest for Hwang Sangjoon. While the term can carry negative connotations — suggesting something formulaic or clichéd — it also reflects a kind of shared sensibility that cuts across nations, societies, and eras. In this project (TokyoRemix), he arranged fragmented images of Tokyo drawn from memory as a foreigner. By colliding visuals that exist on entirely different axes, he sought to reveal moments of strangeness and ambiguous boundaries. At the same time, the work also serves as a formal experiment.
